The history of HTC company can be started from 1997, when the company was founded by Cher Wang, HT Chou and Peter Chou, acting as Chairwoman, Director of the Board and Chairman of the HTC Foundation and President/Chief Executive Officer, respectively.
The history of HTC began with the initial manufacture of notebook computers back in 1997. The company started with the conceptualization of wireless and touch screen portable gadgets. HTC paved the way for the world to discover breakthrough handheld devices since 1999. The first palm size PC was introduced by HTC in 1999 in full color. The first Microsoft Pocket PC was released in the year 2000 and the wireless version in 2002, beginning the age of pocket digital assistants. Smartphones were introduced by HTC in 2002, signifying a new beginning for mobile computing. Mobile phones further evolved in HTC when the first Microsoft Smart Music Phone was released in 2004.
This was followed by the release of the first thin film transistor (TFT) LCD display with a 2.8 inches touch screen. In 2005, HTC launched the first smartphone operating on Windows Mobile 5.0 OS and the very first 3G phone supported by Microsoft. The popular Palm Treo and iPAQ were both creations of HTC. 2005 was also the year when HTC began manufacturing a wide selection of mobile phones with the 3G capabilities. The 3G devices was further improved, resulting to the release of the first tri-band UMTS 3G device operating on Microsoft Windows Mobile in 2006. In 2007, the world was introduced to the world of touch screen gadgets, with HTC’s first tri-band UMTS pocket digital assistant that supports fingertip navigation. In 2008, HTC switched to Android OS, releasing HTC Dream, the world’s first Android mobile phone. 2009 marked the release of the successors of HTC Dream, the HTC Sense and the HTC Hero. HTC remained an unstoppable, releasing in 2010 the first 4G capable mobile phone in the United States, named as HTC Evo 4G.
The history of HTC continues with the company’s dedication to research and development, providing inventions and innovations in the field of mobile computing. Selling over 24 million handsets around the globe, HTC is now a member of the Open Handset Alliance, supporting the further development and innovations that the Android OS can bring to future smartphones and handheld devices.
